Awhile ago my roommate and I were discussing Real Genius, one of my favorite light-hearted comedies. For one reason or another — we must’ve either been discussing Val Kilmer or popcorn — I was telling her about the ending. Shocked that she had missed out on this movie, I added it to Netflix and forced her to watch it. While watching it, we discovered that this movie has a really fantastic ’80s soundtrack. A lot of the music is distinctively ’80s, but unlike a lot of music from then, hasn’t aged badly. Since the film doesn’t have an official soundtrack, we found ourselves looking lyrics up on Google in search of these fantastic songs, one of which was Chaz Jankel’s “Number One” (which may appear here later), the other of which was the Comsat Angels’ “I’m Falling.”

What was funny to me was that, when I looked up the band on All Music Guide, the first sentence of their bio said this: “Erroneously regarded as a synth pop band — and, every now and then — as a band that peaked with a song placed in a scene of Real Genius…” There it was, All Music calling me out on how I found out about this song. It made me think about a band I love(d), Death Cab For Cutie, and how most people who know them right now probably know them because of the OC, which I was happy about at the time and now kind of makes me sad. At the same time, it means they’ll probably stick around for longer than they would have had they not met that break — which could possibly be as much of a good thing as a bad one. It’s a double-edged sword, I suppose. Still, I’m glad for Real Genius, not only because it’s such a good movie, but also for introducing me to this band and this song (although the rest of what I’ve heard of theirs hasn’t impressed me, yet… any fans out there who can point me in the right direction?)

“I was pondering the words of Socrates who said…I drank what?”
My favorite 80’s movie. Better even than the Cusack trilogy and the Princess Bride.

Ooh, I love The Comsat Angels. As for pointing out which way to go, well…
The first two or three albums, their BBC Sessions (Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones) and their 1992 record My Mind’s Eye are the most heavily revered. Their debut, Waiting for a Miracle, features really nervy, tense, slightly hesitant post-punk pop. Sleep No More follows it up with something darker and more compelling that might take the average listener a bit more to sink into. The production’s astounding — and almost every review of this record will note that the drums were recorded on an elevator landing with microphones placed at different points along the elevator — and it’s aged really well. On Fiction, they lighten up a bit and get a bit sentimental and maudlin at certain points (the lovely “After the Rain” and “Pictures”, the mediocre “Birdman”) and parts of it hint at the synth-pop direction they veered toward on Land and 7-Day Weekend (where “I’m Falling” is culled from). The band ended up dismissing those two records and regarded their next one, Chasing Shadows, as the fourth album that they should’ve made. They changed their name to Dream Command for a brief period of time because of legal annoyances in America from a company firmly entrenched in the military-industrial complex and made another record that was pretty reviled. They returned a bit to their roots with My Mind’s Eye, which sounded a bit like what should’ve been the follow-up to Sleep No More and probably could be played side by side with Catherine Wheel’s Ferment (although it’s not quite as shoegazy and there’s more poppier moments) and continued in a similar direction on their final album, The Glamour.

Yeah, Comsat Angels fans feel the same way about the “Real Genius” song that Simple Minds fans feel about that “Breakfast Club” song.

GASP! Bite your tongue!
I cannot fathom any movie being better than the Princess Bride, which is my all time favorite movie…well…maybe after “The Big Sleep” (Bogie and Bacall…rowr!).
“I’m not left-handed!”
Anyway, Real Genius was an awesome movie! Probably my favorite Val Kilmer movie.
